a DIY SUSTAINABLE GREENHOUSE

In 2020, as the pandemic began we wanted to build a greenhouse for seedlings. It became a building that offered so much more. Join us on our journey as we learn how to build, using sustainable, unwanted materials into a glorious garden respite and seedling sanctuary.

Gold Lion Farm: Our DIY Greenhouse Journey

The Gold Lion Farm greenhouse takes shape

After two months of hard work, our greenhouse at Gold Lion Farm begins to take shape

Three years ago, at the beginning of the pandemic, Gold Lion Farm embarked on an ambitious project: creating a greenhouse for our seasonal plants and seedlings. What made this project truly exhilarating was the fact that we built it entirely ourselves, despite lacking any construction experience. We were determined to use recycled materials such as windows and doors, reflecting our commitment to sustainability. We scoured Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, Home Depot (they sell windows they take out of houses) for our materials. We found several gorgeous artisan windows and doors we wanted to incorporate, too. After carefully assessing our property, we found a great location, off our driveway. In this blog, we share the story of our DIY greenhouse adventure and the rewarding results it brought.

A Commitment to Sustainability

From the outset, Gold Lion Farm held a strong commitment to sustainability. As we planned the greenhouse, we wanted to minimize our environmental impact by repurposing discarded materials. By sourcing windows and doors from upcycled windows and doors, we ensured that our greenhouse would be a testament to recycling and reducing waste. This approach not only aligned with our farm's eco-friendly ethos but also allowed us to create a unique structure with character and charm.

Learning by Doing

As we ventured into this construction project, we faced a significant hurdle: neither Cameron nor I had any prior experience in building structures. However, our determination to bring our vision to life outweighed any doubts or uncertainties. We recognized that we would have to learn how to use the tools, level the building, and ensure the stability of the greenhouse – all from scratch.

Overcoming Challenges

Installing the double doors on the greenhouse was a big day!

Installing the double doors for the greenhouse, a lot of extra work but worth it

The journey of building our greenhouse was a challenging yet immensely rewarding one. We relied on online tutorials, books, and advice from friends who had construction experience to guide us through the process. Every step was a learning opportunity, and we embraced the inevitable setbacks and adjustments required along the way. In all honesty-we had no construction experience. We purchased a used table saw from an estate sale. While we got a great deal, we laugh at the first day we used it. We actually turned it on and ducked! Afraid the blade would come spinning off and wack us. What a great surprise though, we honed the skill of the table saw, and with patience, learned how to accurately cut each piece of lumber, trim each window and every roof panel.

The excitement of discovering new skills and witnessing our greenhouse take shape pushed us forward. We took the time to research and understand the best construction practices, ensuring that our greenhouse would not only be functional but also withstand the test of time.

Creating a Lasting Space

The greenhouse at Gold Lion Farm starts to take its shape

Once the doors were installed, we added the corrugated roof. The entire space was insulated, so that the greenhouse kept it’s proper temps during the seasons.

After approximately six months of hard work, dedication, and a fair share of trial and error, our DIY greenhouse stood proudly on our farm. It was an incredibly gratifying moment. We had transformed recycled materials into a beautiful and functional space where we could nurture seedlings and enjoy the tranquility of the winter months.

The greenhouse became more than just a structure; it became a sanctuary for us. The natural light flooding in through the upcycled windows and the scent of blooming plants created an ambiance that instantly uplifted our spirits. We found solace in tending to our seedlings, knowing that we had created a space that nurtured life while reducing our ecological footprint.

The Joy of Shared Experiences

Looking back, one of the most rewarding aspects of this project was the shared experience. Building the greenhouse brought our family and friends together. We bonded over the construction challenges, celebrated each milestone, and reveled in the final result. The greenhouse became a symbol of our collective determination, creativity, and love for nature.

A greenhouse space to garden and relax

Gold Lion Farm's DIY greenhouse project exemplified the power of determination, resourcefulness, and sustainability. We transformed recycled windows and doors into a beautiful structure, learning construction skills along the way. The six-month journey taught us that with passion and commitment, we can overcome any obstacle. Our greenhouse now stands as a testament to our love for nature, a space where we can nurture seedlings and find solace in the beauty of the natural world.

As we reflect on our accomplishments, we encourage others to embark on their own sustainable projects. Whether it's repurposing materials or learning new skills, the journey itself is immensely rewarding.
